Jayana
Although she’d heard Corey recite those words a thousand times, when he said them today it made Jayana sick to her stomach. She was doing all that she could to show him she wanted to be with him. She never missed an opportunity to show him that he still held her heart. No matter what, when, or how she did it- it wasn’t enough for him. He blocked her out at every turn. She was slowly running out of fuel, but Jayana wasn’t the type of woman to just give up. There had to be something she could do to get close to him again. She refused to believe they were completely done with each other. She could only shake her head in despair.
“C’mon TJ, let’s go have dinner; just the two of us.” She got her purse from the floor board and ushered him out of the back seat.
“Ok mommy.” Jayana watched Tre’s mini-me grab his special backpack.
When he was out of the car, he held my hand as we walked towards the restaurant doors. Jayana felt a twinge of guilt about the way she had been carrying on. She loved each of her children equally even though she didn’t always show it when Tre Sr. wasn’t around. Maybe that is what Corey saw when he looked at her. Jayana treated TJ as if she were ashamed of him when she was around Corey. She knew that it wasn’t her baby’s fault about the way he was conceived.
‘Bitch, you gots to do better and be better!’
Jayana had to have a pep talk in her own mind. She was spiraling out of control. When she looked down she was greeted with a cute snaggled-toothed grin on TJ’s face. She saw a little pain in his eyes.
In Jayana’s opinion it looked like he could’ve been saying, ‘yea bitch, I know you ain’t shit!’ to himself.
Jayana quickly looked away.
The two of them had a nice dinner together. Jayana couldn’t recall the last time she’d spent one on one time with her baby boy. While the two of them ate they talked about all of his interests and things going on with him at school. Jayana listened and interacted with TJ more and more with each martini she had. She had a good buzz but felt that she would be fine to get the two of them home safe and sound with no problems. When the bill came Jayana had Tre’s credit card waiting on the edge of the table. The waitress picked the card up with a smile but when she returned she had a frown.
“Mrs. Jameson, I’m sorry to tell you this but your credit card has been declined and it is giving me a numeric code message that the card has been reported lost or stolen.” Jayana searched the young girl’s shirt for a name tag. The name on her shirt read ‘Beth’ and it sounded cheerful enough but her words were not cheerful at all.
“Lost or stolen, that is impossible! I just used this card yesterday with no problems for sure.
